Chinese Herbal Medicine

Chinese Herbal Medicine is an ancient system of health care that has undergone continual development over the centuries.

Chinese herbs are mainly plant based, but some preparations include minerals or animal products. They can be packaged in their whole form with which a patient would “decoct” or cook them at home. This would result with a liquid which will be drunk over a period of a day or up to a few days. They may also come in powders, tablets, capsules, pastes, or lotions depending on the herb and its intended use.

Different herbs have different properties and these properties can be enhanced or manipulated depending on their combination. They are intended to balance particular parts of the body. Prescribing a particular herb or concoction of herbs will depend on the patient’s particular constitution and often will vary according to the individual, not necessarily the condition.
